You’re The One That I Want

GreaseYoureTheOneThatIWant7InchSingleCoverToday, I want to share my happy song, the one that makes me grin like an idiot and want to jump up and shake it every time I hear it.

Performed by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John,  “You’re the One That I Want” was written by John Farrar for the 1978 film version of the musical, Grease. The single reached number one on the U. S. Billboard Hot 100 in June 1978, and topped the U. K. Singles Chart that same summer for seven weeks, some months before the film had even been released there.

I’ve included a second video of the song made in 2002 at the Grease DVD release party. Twenty-four years between the first and second video, but John and Olivia still had it. And I bet they still do.

  1. I’ll have to watch the 2002 video tonight, but I like the song. I was a teenager competing in ballroom dance and disco when the movie came out, and it was all the rage on the dance scene.

  2. Takes me back to starting uni – one of my housemates went to the cinema at least sixteen times to see the film when it came out. And of course we all wished we could look as good as Olivia in THOSE trousers 😀

  3. Love this!! M does too. 😀 I was 7 when Grease released, and it’s been something we watch about every year! We shared it with our children as well. So many good songs, but this one is definitely and happy favorite. Can’t help but to shake my booty and sing along. Mamma Mia is a close second. Thanks for sharing, Cathy.

  4. Loved the memories this brings up for me. It’s a trip down memory lane, as well as a present day favorite (in terms of meaning). But I also got to perform in a stage production of it for a short time. Great selection, Cathy.

  5. Oh my gosh, I wasn’t expecting to see/hear one of my all-time favorites when I popped over to visit, Cathy. Just what the doctor ordered! I don’t even know how many times I watched Grease after it first came out, and then by the time of the 2nd one, my teens were performing it in high school performances of it. Thanks for the memories.
